9/23/2016

Wow!  What a way to cap off the beautiful summer we enjoyed here in the Pacific Northwest...with an indoor torrent of a rainshower streaming throughout our happy place of health, fitness, and joy!   And now, as we move into the fall season, Maya Whole Health Studio is also in a transition phase.  The restoration work is in full swing, and we have been given a fairly firm assurance that we will be back in operations, with our lovely space gleaming like brand new, by early November.

If you are missing your Maya, like we are missing you, that probably seems like a long ways off, but remember how fast the summer flew by?  And here is some great news for all of you missing your classes!  We have made arrangements with our generous friends at Advanced Holistic Health (AHH) to have Maya instructors offer several FREE classes each week in their lovely light-filled studio, located just a few miles north of Maya Whole Health Studio, just off I405 Exit 7, at 1800 NE 44th Ste 240 Renton WA 98056
.

These free classes will be held WEEKLY from October 1st-November 3rd:

Please note: we will not have desk staff available for all of these classes, so late arrivals will often not be possible.  We ask that our clients use the parking spaces that are closer to the wall across from the entrance to the building, to provide ample parking for the clients of the regular tenant businesses, who have been so kind to welcome us into their community.

We will be adding classes and instructors to the interim schedule throughout the month of October and updating the regular schedule that will be in effect in November. Subscribe to the Currents Blog or Follow Maya Whole Health Studio on Facebook in order to stay up-to-date about interim class offerings; details of Grand re-opening; and to stay connected with your favorite Maya instructors and practitioners, who will be offering up stories and dropping knowledge through those media throughout the closure.

Maya health practitioners will also be offering very limited medical and massage services at AHH, for clients who had treatment plans that were interrupted by the closure.  We wish we could fulfill every request for appointment with our stellar healers!  For new or returning clients, we will be starting to schedule appointments again for November and December in the coming week.  Feel free to drop a line with your appointment request, including practitioner and your availability for appointments to our main studio e-mail and we will do our best to get you in as soon as possible.

In the meantime, from all of us to all of you- Happy Autumn Equinox!  Best wishes for a fall time full of gorgeous colors and warm foods, and hopefully lots of visits to a newly refurbished Maya Whole Health Studio.

Finding Balance :: Connecting with Alec

One of the challenges of living a long healthy life is maintaining our balance. I talk about balance often with my students. I believe that it is helpful to be reminded that as we age our sense of balance will shift and may even be lost if we do not regularly practice it. Loss of balance can begin for women in their early 30's and men in their late 30's, and continues the older we get. However, unlike vision or hearing, balance is something that we can easily improve. In as little as 4 minutes a day you can see a noticeable improvement, no mater what age you are, after just several months.

As a yoga instructor I would encourage you to incorporate balance work into your daily home practice. If you have not gotten to the point of having a home practice, don't let that stop you from improving your balance. Here are two simple things that you could do starting today:
1. If you wash your dishes by hand, or even while you are loading the dish washer, stand in front of your sink and lift one foot. Keep the foot lifted for about 30 seconds and then switch sides. Do this several times with each leg.
2. If you have a Sonicare toothbrush stand on alternating feet as your toothbrush goes through the 4 quadrants. This will mean the you do both legs twice. And if you brush your teach twice a day that's 4 minutes of balance work each and every day.

These are just two examples, you could use this practice doing anything in your life where you are standing still. The important thing is don't wait, start today, and let me know how it's going after your first 90 days.

One of the biggest challenges your practice is continuing to do it. This is why so many of us have stories about how we returned to it after months, or even years away from it. From the beginning there is a vague suggestion from deep within that the practice, the experience of yoga can help you, heal you, so you come back - but why did you ever stop?

Even if you do manage to keep a sacred practice at home, it can fall short of fulfilling the requirement of inspiring you and may run the risk of losing your attention. If you find yourself easily distracted or bored while trying to practice at home, you may try asking yourself “What is my motivation?” Many find group classes to be helpful and inspiring. Taking a group class gives us an opportunity to step outside of the decision making role, be held accountable for participating, gives us perspective and can help awaken us to the illusion of our ego.

So how do I, as a yoga teacher, stay motivated to keep up this practice? Firstly, I let go of the idea that there is any prescribed universal form or structure to the practice that everyone is supposed to follow. I connect with my intention and bring my awareness with me into everything I do. The beautiful thing is that every day, every hour, every moment becomes a part of the practice and is all the richer because of it. Every encounter that you have becomes part of your practice. Everyone becomes your teacher and you become a student of yourself.
Get still.
Drop into your breath.

Temporary Studio Closure

9/7/2016

Due to water damage from a pipe break in the building, our studio will be closed through the month of September. This is in order to allow a contractor to assess and fix the damage, as well as a cleaning and air quality crew to have full access to the space. While we regret the interruption to your classes and services, this action is necessary to honor our commitment to provide a safe and healthy environment for our staff and clients for the long term.

We hope to have a some classes and appointments available soon with our instructors and practitioners at a secondary location nearby. We will be posting updates and any scheduled classes on our Facebook and here on the blog. If you need to reschedule an appointment, please contact us by phone or email so that we can get you on our Wait List.  We will also be regularly posting blogs from our instructors and practitioners with tips and tricks to keep up with your yoga practice and self care - so stay tuned in! Thank you for your understanding. If you have any questions or concerns, please email us at [email protected] and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

We look forward to seeing you when the studio re-opens!
