New Changes to the Schedule Starting This Week! :: Life Strength Conditioning Class with Yamar Washington begins TOMORROW @ 4:30 !!!

3/31/2014

Life Strength Conditioning with Yamar Washington starts Tuesday, April 1st. No, really, tomorrow!

Picture
Life Strength Conditioning with Yamar Washington

4:30 PM - Tuesdays  (begins the week of March 31st)

6:30 AM - Thursdays (begins the week of April 7th)

3:30 PM - Fridays (begins the week of April 7th)

In this high energy class, we get out of our heads and let go of fears and self-imposed limitations, so that we can find greater strength, flexibility, and agility.  Life Strength Conditioning encourages trust in the intuitive awareness each of us have to strengthen, tone, and condition the body to its full potential and provides an opportunity to mix up a regular practice of yoga and Pilates with a higher impact form of conditioning.  This class is appropriate for anyone with a moderate level of mobility.  If you are able to jog, even at a slow pace, and lift a 2 lb. weight without significant pain, come ahead!  Options will be provided for a wide range of fitness and confidence levels.  We will explore interval training methods fused with yoga-inspired movement methods to engage our cardiovascular system, as well as various muscle groups and systems throughout our bodies.  In the process, we will experience moments of intense challenge and overcome those challenges to experience holistic exhileration.  Runners call it "the runner's high".  Impact athletes call it "being in the zone".  We will have fun and support one another in meeting our individual goals, in an affirming, and non-competitive environment.  Get ready to stretch. Get ready to move. Get ready to lift.  Get ready to smile.  And get ready to love your body.

**Weather permitting, this class will often be completely or partially moved outdoors.  Please bring or wear athletic footwear appropriate for outdoor use.

Meet Our New Instructor :: Yamar Washington

Picture
Instructor Yamar Washington grew up in Houston, Texas, immersed in the world of high-impact, competitive sports from the time he could walk.  He went on to play football and run track at Indiana University as a student athlete, with a strong interest in academics.  He graduated with a major in Communications and Culture (Management focus) and an English Minor, and worked a brief stint in the NFL, signing as an undrafted free agent with the Washington Redskins, before pursuing opportunities in other football leagues.  He currently plays Premier League Rugby, competing at a professional level for the few spots available with national level teams.  Besides competitive sports, Yamar was also highly influenced by the somewhat contrasting influence of his mother and other family members who practiced yoga and natural healing arts, and he developed a strong interest in traditional medicine and holistic methods of healing and strengthening the body.  These combined interests have resulted in a unique perspective on strength conditioning that balances the vigorous aspects of interval training of his athletic background with an affirming orientation towards self-love, appreciation, and intuitive awareness of the body. Yamar has been doing Sports Performance/Personal Training in various settings for nearly 10 years, working with a diverse clientele, ranging from professional athletes to youth sports teams to seniors recovering from surgery to groups of computer jockeys.  Much of the choreography he uses in his group work has developed out of collegiate/professional workouts that are modified for the everyday person. If a particular exercise is not a good fit for someone, based on body type or injury recovery, Yamar can provide a modification for just about everything. "I stress that whether somebody is preparing to participate in the Olympics, walk a 5k, or just trying to get the blood flowing again after being inactive for a long time, the equitable connection between mind-body-spirit is the most important aspect towards personal health and performance. Our physical bodies are capable of doing far more than we realize... we just have to remove the mental blocks."

Traditional Chinese Medicine Spring Defense Workshop w/ Diane Yeh

3/30/2014

We've all heard that old saying, "You are what you eat." From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective it could be said, "You are as healthy as the food that you eat." Join Diane Yeh and explore the healing benefits of food and learn how to make informed choices about the food you consume in relation to your own body's needs as we move into Spring.

Picture
Saturday, April 5th
5:00-7:00 PM

Cost: $40

(Annual Member 20% discount applies)

This workshop will address the concept of “functional food” going into
spring. You will learn to preserve your health by making informed choices about the food you eat. Food offers healing benefits apart from nutrition, this is what links diet and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Food is considered more than just sustenance; it contains therapeutic properties. While acupuncture and massage may be used to treat an ailment, and herbal mixtures infused to make teas, the first line of treatment is usually diet itself. Why different foods are consumed each season and what are their health benefits? Questions like this and more will be address in this imformative workshop.

Recommended Read :: Over the Rainbow- Your Guide to Living the Life of Your Dreams by Debbie Dixon- Available at Maya Whole Health

3/23/2014

Over the Rainbow is not your typical self help, guru book. It is a raw, real, honest guide that will show you how to get from where you are, to where you want to be.

Picture
"Rock bottom is a place where life exists in the shadows, lost souls with broken wings unable to fly, wander looking for love in fame and fortune and pain is accepted as a way of life."

I witnessed rock bottom and it looked much like what the media is glorifying as the destination we are trying to arrive at. I was there in the midst of celebrities. I attended parties in penthouses and mansions. I worked all over the United States. I was featured in movies, television, magazines and commercials I was even in the National Enquirer alongside Halle Berry. To most, my life may have looked glamorous. In reality, I was surrounded by sleaze, debauchery, hollow, lost and soulless people who emanated hurt and pain. I watched many walk this very fine line. On one side you give up your soul, the other side is a journey of blind faith, made on foot until you can mend your wing. Often those walking the line would slip and fall, never to be seen again. Swallowed up by the monster labeled “fame and fortune,” resulting in the sacrificing of their soul and the separation from their selfless, true nature towards a life of need, greed and speed. Fear lead to struggle, which lead me right off the edge.

Picture
Once at the bottom, I had seen with my own eyes the monster that had eaten many of my friends. I think that was exactly what I had needed all along, to look the monster directly in its eyes and say “I am not scared of you! I know life is good and I intend to prove it to the world!” As I pulled myself out of the darkness and climbed up the mountain of joy, I often looked back and wondered, “why was I able to do it while I am leaving behind so many still lost and lonely?” My curiosity continued to grow leaving me in a constant state of wonder about humans and our capability. This wonder has led me to the feet of many masters and hundreds of books, searching for answers. Over the last 16 years, I have immersed myself in self-inquiry through the practices of yoga and meditation. About 7 years ago I made the transition from student to teacher. As a teacher I had seen people embarking on the climb up the same mountain I had once scaled, and I was able to assist them on their path. I have been to the place that most never return whole from and I have brought back a message I must share. These pages hold that message. I woke up one day, looked around, and found myself nestled among those our society looks upon with disapproval. I realized I was no different. I intend to show you a story of triumph over the confines of jail and drugs, pain and fear. I have transcended from this dark world and discovered a magical formula that allows me to stand in the very same shoes, in the very same location and see a whole different world. This new world is one of beauty and love, compassion and kindness everywhere I look. I have written this book with the prayer that you will witness my journey and watch your world change right in front of your eyes!

Our current way of life has brought about a dispersion of human energy on all levels. We have lost an awareness of what is happening to us in the midst of concerning ourselves completely with a material existence. Whether you think too much or not enough, whether you work too much or not enough, or sleep too much or too little, you accumulate tension. Knowing how to free yourself from tension offers freedom from many of life’s problems. The practice of yoga nidra is the scientific method of removing these tensions and bringing balance to the internal energy system of our chakras.

Through the practice of yoga nidra, we are not only relaxing, but restructuring and reforming our whole personality energetically from within. We are burning away old habits and tendencies of the mind in order to be born anew. The secret to this transformation is conscious relaxation and peace.

The yogic texts all unequivocally state that peace can only be found within, never without. Therefore, if we wish to create a more peaceful world, we must first learn how to turn our attention inward, to relax and harmonize our own body and mind. Yoga Nidra is not only an incredible technique to help realize your true nature, but it is a priceless resource for recovering from any physical, emotional or mental turmoil you have experienced in your life.  Stress, fatigue, anxiety, ill health, confusion, and unwanted habits can all be removed with the help of Yoga Nidra.  Insomnia can be cured and the ability to experience deep, restorative sleep can be attained.

This workshop will include some asana practice to prepare us for guided meditation. Please come dressed to move and be comfortable, layers are always good and/or a blanket. Some experience with yoga recommended, no experience with mediation necessary.

Pre-registration is strongly recommended.

Picture
As we move into springtime at Maya, we celebrate new beginnings of many kinds.  We enjoy the blossoms that we see emerging all around us and we let fresh air flow into spaces that have been closed off for winter.  It seems fitting that our Community Benefit Partner for the month of March is New Beginnings, an organization that provides support for women and children seeking resources to protect their growth and allow them blossom and grow healthy, after experiencing the stifling isolation of domestic violence.

New Beginnings offers hope and support to people in danger from domestic violence and works to empower survivors.  They provide education and awareness through schools and partner organizations, a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, transitional housing, and counseling/advocacy services for women to emerge successfully from violent relationships and lifestyles.  They assist families in finding peaceful ways of interacting and moving beyond survival to success.

In support of the important work of New Beginnings, Maya Whole Health Studio is collecting financial and in-kind donations throughout the month of March.  All proceeds from our by-donation benefit classes will go to New Beginnings.  We are also collecting items to be provided to women and children in emergency shelter.  Useful items include:

What's New in the Boutique? New Styles, Great Colors, and Sales! OH MY!

Our Commitment:: Fun Fashion For Fitness Without Compromising Karma

We know that our Maya community is mindful of impact on the greater world.  We have frequently heard from you that you value opportunities to support positive values in purchases that you make and in making choices about what you wear on your beautiful bodies during the time that you are enjoying your fitness classes at Maya.  So Maya Whole Health is committed to offering  fitness apparel and goods that meet high standards of sustainable and ethical manufacturing practices.  As the new Retail Manager at Maya, I have been reviewing and refreshing our offerings in the Maya boutique since the beginning of the year.  When choosing brands to carry in the boutique and carry the Maya logo, I look at factors such as a company's transparency, commitment to using sustainable fabrics, and manufacturing processes that are both eco-friendly and human friendly.  We also want our clothing to fit every body type and make everyone who puts it on feel amazing!

We have developed a great relationship with prAna over the years.  This company has consistently met or exceeded our expectations for ethical manufacturing and corporate responsibility, and we are excited to see some of the great new styles they have rolled out this year.  We have also brought in Leo Star Athletica, which is great new fitness line, based just across the border, in Canada.  We expect to bring in styles from AyAyAy in coming months and continually search the globe for other lines of great fitness apparel that is stylish, comfortable, and provides options for a wide range of healthy body sizes and shapes.  And we're always open to suggestions!

Here are some of our favorite new styles by prAna. Their Spring 2014 line is filled with amazing jewel toned colors and fun prints. The Cassidy Capri is my personal favorite. These pants are so soft and cozy, but at the same time amazingly figure flattering. Pair them with a sports bra and the Luca Tank and you have a perfectly chic and comfy outfit for yoga, running, or lounging around the house.

What is the Color of Your Energy? Join Lynn Brown March 15th to Find Out!

3/10/2014

The Colorful World of Energy. What Color Are You and What Does it Mean?    Join Lynn Brown, owner of Raa-Ness of Life, for an exciting workshop exploring chakras, auras and energy.

Picture
Come learn about the colorful world of Chakras, your Aura, and what it all means. You will learn about each of the Chakras and how they correspond to different aspects of your physical body and physical world and why it is important to give them regular love and attention. Lynn will give each of you a brief "reading" on the most prominent color of your personal aura and what that means. Come Play in the beautiful world of "Energy"

Energy healings are an excellent way to release blocks and unwanted energies, and get your own energy flowing, so you can heal as well as increase your overall vitality and clarity. Many physical problems have their root cause on an energy level. In other words, physical problems can be a symptom energetic, emotional, psychic or spiritual issues. Rather than focusing on the body symptom, spiritual healing can work with problems at their energetic root cause.

She grew up playing in the dirt, hunting, fishing, and playing every sport that she could. Lynn is passionate about helping individuals and families to bring their hopes and dreams into reality. A few years after starting a successful Financial Planning practice, Lynn began to explore and develop her intuitive gifts. She has spent several years studying; enhancing her abilities and practicing the tools that have impacted and moved her life in ways that she never imagined possible. She is thrilled to bring this experience to others. ''Open your heart to the rawness of life so that you may feel it's true beauty. Breathe as others would breathe, sing as others would sing, feel as others would feel, so that you may humble your soul to the pure equality of love amongst all people...hold this space and pass on its richness to the remaining human race. And that is all, because, that IS all.''
