It’s an absolutely beautiful day. You’re driving to your destination with a smile on your face and good thoughts in your head. You feel relaxed, calm and you’re enjoying the stretch of road in front of you. Suddenly, from out of nowhere, a car swerves into your lane. You break hard, your body stiffening, eyes widening in surprise, breath caught in your throat. The impact comes before you know it and you’re plunged into the steering wheel. You’ve come to a stop, but your heart is racing and you’re shaking uncontrollably. Once it’s over, you sink back against your seat, check yourself for injuries and try to get a reasonable breath back. You’re pretty sure you’re ok and exit the car.

Trauma comes to us in many different forms; car accidents, abuse, war or natural disaster. We may come out on the other side thinking we handled it well and are ready to move on with our lives. But then another incident, close call, or person we don’t recognize can trigger the exact same response we had when the initial trauma occurred. This is the simplified face of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD.

Dr. Bessel van der Kolk of the Trauma Center at JRI in Brookline, Massachusetts, confirms that the physical body stores the information of trauma and stays ready to suffer it again. We may “think” we have moved on, but our bodies can stiffen unexpectedly, heart race and sweat pour off of us at just the idea we may become a victim again.

Parts of our brain, such as the amygdala located in the temporal lobe, can override any rationalization we may be making, even before we have a chance to make it. Our neocortex, or thinking brain, is hijacked by this almond shaped mass. A part of the limbic system and a crucial part of our survival instinct, the amygdala is invaluable. Yet when it perceives a threat (because it isn’t a “thinking” structure) it can kick in and cause us to react before we can analyze. When this pattern repeats over and over, the brain adapts, shutting off “normal” responses. Eventually, dissociation can occur and the trauma victim begins to “check out”, unable to process emotion constructively. Sense of safety is compromised and the body stays poised and ready for future assaults.

Are the snakes stopping you?!?:: Connecting with Lynn Brown

Today I was enjoying a wonderful walk, focused on the Olympic mountains directly in front of me, out in the distance. It appeared, as I walked down the hill, that this road led DIRECTLY to the beautiful mountain range...no cars in the way, NOTHING but the road between me and my "focus point".

As I continued to walk and took my eyes off of the "focus point" I noticed a black figure about one block ahead on the side walk. This black figure looked to me like a snake; wound up, about to strike. I don't know about you, but snakes FREAK me out! But I kept walking towards it...entranced in the ultimate beauty of the mountains "my focus point". As I got closer to the object I checked it out one more time...it was ONLY a piece of a scrappy black trash bag. PHEW!!

Picture
I'm glad that my focus point, my goal, and my conviction to it, was more important that letting what could have been a snake stop me from proceeding forward.

I think this is a good example of what happens to people in life....they take their eyes off of the goal, the focus point...oftentimes looking for things that may stop them...only to realize that if they kept their eyes on the goal, the black snake was only a MIRAGE that oftentimes disappears by the time you even get to it.

Hope this story helps.

Navigating Massage Therapy: Connecting with Wendy Ray

Hello there! My name is Wendy Ray, billing manager at
Maya Whole Health Studio.

This year marks a first for us in that we plan to use this platform as a way to educate you on how to avoid health insurance ‘landmines’. My goal is to help minimize unexpected and often costly surprises, allowing you to shift the primary focus back to your health and well-being.

Let’s begin with Massage Therapy. If you are currently being treated or would like to be treated by one
of our Licensed Massage Therapists, we must have a massage referral or prescription on file.

What is the difference between a referral and a prescription?

Some Physicians write referrals and others write prescriptions. Both are acceptable.

Why does Maya require a referral or prescription?

In the State of Washington LMP’s are not licensed to diagnose.

But my insurance company said I do not need a referral to get a massage.

Your insurance carrier is simply saying that your plan does not require a referral or prescription. One key
component of every insurance claim are the diagnosis code[s]. We cannot file a claim on your behalf without the reason i.e. diagnosis for which you are being seen.

Where do I get a referral for massage therapy?
  • Your primary care provider
  • Chiropractor
  • Naturopath doctor

You are also welcome to make an appointment with one of our healthcare practitioners for assessment.

Every referral or prescription should include the following:
  • Duration (Start and stop date)
  • Frequency (Once a week, once a month, etc.)
  • Maximum number of visits
  • Diagnosis code[s]
I have my referral or prescription, what's next?
You can use any of the following methods to provide us with your massage referral.
  • Fax (206.309.3383)
  • Email ([email protected])
  • Drop off at the front desk
  • Mail

Please keep in mind that making sure we have a current referral or prescription on file is your responsibility. If your insurance company denies payment due to an outdated prescription or referral, you will be responsible for the entire amount billed. In an effort to avoid that, we will mail you a courtesy reminder card that it is time to update prior to the expiration of your most current referral.

Heart ~ Matter and Spirit :: Connecting with Terry Gough

The Heart—How many everyday sayings & references do we use that involve the Heart—Without really thinking about them?

Take it to Heart / Have a Heart / Young at Heart / Heart of the Home / Heartfelt

Beyond that we can describe someone as having a broken heart, being a lonely heart, having a brave heart, a loving heart, a cold heart, a warm heart, a big heart, or an open heart.

What if someone steals your heart?
Does someone hold the key to your heart?
Is something weighing on your heart?

Picture
We can be light-hearted or heavy-hearted.

Sometimes we are lion-hearted.

How do all these things affect our health and the way we live our lives?

The heart is really the Heart of the Matter & the Spirit.

Explore these things by moving through a heart opening sequence of gentle asana (Yoga movement & poses). Follow with guided meditation,  tuning in to our heart's desires and providing an opportunity to release feelings that are bogging us down.

To create new awareness and provide a place to write from the heart, personalize a basic spiral bound journal to continue your inquiry.

Or, join me Saturday February 20th from 2:00-4:00 pm and I will lead the way.  Basic materials will be provided, but if you would like to bring personal photos, mementos or anything else that is special to you feel free!
