Get Motivated :: Connecting with Kristen

One of the biggest challenges your practice is continuing to do it. This is why so many of us have stories about how we returned to it after months, or even years away from it. From the beginning there is a vague suggestion from deep within that the practice, the experience of yoga can help you, heal you, so you come back - but why did you ever stop?

Even if you do manage to keep a sacred practice at home, it can fall short of fulfilling the requirement of inspiring you and may run the risk of losing your attention. If you find yourself easily distracted or bored while trying to practice at home, you may try asking yourself “What is my motivation?” Many find group classes to be helpful and inspiring. Taking a group class gives us an opportunity to step outside of the decision making role, be held accountable for participating, gives us perspective and can help awaken us to the illusion of our ego.

So how do I, as a yoga teacher, stay motivated to keep up this practice? Firstly, I let go of the idea that there is any prescribed universal form or structure to the practice that everyone is supposed to follow. I connect with my intention and bring my awareness with me into everything I do. The beautiful thing is that every day, every hour, every moment becomes a part of the practice and is all the richer because of it. Every encounter that you have becomes part of your practice. Everyone becomes your teacher and you become a student of yourself.
